How this calculator works

Sleep debt is the gap between the sleep your body needs and the sleep you actually got. For each day, this calculator compares your target sleep need with your reported sleep hours.

Surplus sleep is counted when actual sleep is higher than target. The net sleep debt subtracts surplus from debt so you can see whether catch-up sleep helped.

Sleep debt calculator FAQs

What is sleep debt?

Sleep debt is the gap between the sleep your body needs and the sleep you actually got over time. This calculator estimates that gap over one week.

How do you calculate sleep debt?

For each day, the calculator compares your target sleep need with the hours slept. Shortfalls become debt, extra sleep becomes surplus, and the weekly net shows the remaining balance.

How much sleep do adults usually need?

Many adults use 7 to 9 hours as a practical target range. Your personal need can vary, so choose the target that best matches how much sleep leaves you rested.

Can sleep debt explain snoring or sleep apnea?

Sleep debt does not diagnose snoring or sleep apnea. If you are tired despite enough time in bed, snore loudly, or have witnessed breathing pauses, consider a screening tool and a clinician conversation.
